What cage?

One with metal bars. It depends on personal opinion - do you want solid floor or wire floor - this is the pros and cons of each:

Wire Floor:

Pros:

• The waste from the chinchilla will fall through
• As of that more hygiene

Cons:

• If a chinchilla were to fall (however unlikely this is) they'd hurt themselves
• A chinchilla could easily get bumble foot - their feet get sore in other words
• A chinchilla may get it's leg stuck I'll put a story on the next point
• A chinchilla owner had a cage with a wire floor for their chinchilla - the chinchilla was running around the cage, energetically and got his leg caught. The owner had to take the chinchilla to the vet - a whole hip had been dislocated and the chinchilla had to be put down. This chinchilla was only 2 years old.

Solid Floor:

Pros:

• If a chinchilla falls - the landing will be softer for it.
• Your chinchilla is far less likely to get their foot caught or get bumble foot

Cons:

• Your chinchilla will be walking on it's waste constantly - so may be at risk of disease - to prevent that I recommend checking what corner your chinchilla uses and putting a corner toilet for it - can be bought at most pet stores.
• It'll be messy for the owner as they may dig around a bit!

All in all - I prefer solid bottom cages but either is good. If you get a wire bottom cage get some planks of wood or sea-grass mats to give your chinchilla a break.

A (solid bottom) cage I recommend getting is the Ferret Nation Cage or Critter Nation Cage. These can be bought in most countries. Get the two-story one. By the way - the only difference is the Critter Nation cage has smaller, horizontal bar spacing yet however the Ferret Nation bar spacing is vertical and wider.

A chinchilla on its own can live in a cage about 75cm high and 50cm wide, this though is kind of mean! For a travel cage the cage should be about 30cm high, 35cm wide and 40cm long
