Why was the Australian Koala foundation started?

The Australian koala Foundation was originally started for the purpose of conserving and managing wild koalas. During the mid 1980s, a veterinary science graduate by the name of Steve Brown studied the increasing incidence of ovarian cysts in female koalas, and the associated chlamydial disease. Realising the disease posed a major threat to wild koalas, Brown sought to establish a group that could fund research and help the koala. A chance meeting with Barry Scott, the Founding President of the Somerville House School Foundation, enabled Brown to put forward his idea, which was enthusiastically embraced by Scott, who was forward-thinking enough to realise the need to preserve this iconic animal. They rallied enough support from friends and colleagues to be able to establish the foundation. The best description of why the Australian Koala Foundation exists now can be found on its Mission statement, at the related link below.

What does the Australian Koala Foundation expect to happen when they do save all the koalas?

The Australian Koala Foundation is not expecting to save all the koalas. Its job is to raise awareness of their plight, and to educate people about little things the everyday person can do to help prevent the eventual extinction of these animals. This is a continual process, and the Foundation's job will never be finished. There will always be people who need to understand to keep their dogs supervised. The Foundation will always need funds to run the wildlife hospitals it supports, and the scientific research it supports, trying to find a cure for the koala chlamydia, which has caused such a problem for koalas.

Are there 700 koalas left in the world or more?

How many koalas live in Victoria?

It is not known how many koalas there are in Victoria, just that it is the state with the highest population of koalas.According to the Australian Koala Foundation, some scientists believe there are hundreds of thousands of koalas still in Victoria, yet the Australian Koala Foundation estimates the numbers of koalas overall throughout Australia to be less than 80,000.

Is the koala's population bad?

The population of koalas in some parts of Australia is very healthy, while in other areas it is vulnerable, even threatened. As a species, the koala is not yet classified as Endangered, but its population is in decline. The Australia Koala Foundation believes that koala numbers in the wild have dropped to below 80,000. Current estimates suggest the figure could be anywhere between 40,000 and 100,000.

Are koala populations currently being monitored?

Koala populations are being monitored, but current methods have their limitations. The Australian Koala Foundation works actively to monitor koala populations, but they have limited resources. Their view is that the Australian koala population has dropped to below 80,000, but because not enough research on individual populations is being done, they cannot be sure of the accuracy of their estimate. The problem is that the Federal Government remains of the belief that koala numbers are much healthier than that. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee of the Australian Government has put the koala population in the 'hundreds of thousands'. The related link below will also help you to learn more about how koala populations are monitored. It takes you through to various koala research projects currently underway in Queensland.

What was the population of koalas in 2006?

How many koalas are left in their natural environment?

Many experts say as few as 80,000 Koalas left in the wild, while the Australian Koala Foundation estimates figures are possibly as low as 43,000, and certainly no more than 80,000.Koalas are still listed as "common" in most parts of Queensland, but in the southeast region of Queensland, their status will soon be changed to "vulnerable", following a drop of over 60% in koala numbers in the past decade. The NSW Government listed the koala as "rare and vulnerable" in 1992, and following protective measures, this has been changed to "vulnerable"; as a result, koala numbers are improving. In Victoria, the koala is not on the threatened species list at all, and in some protected and remote regions, there is actually an overpopulation problem. Where new colonies have been established on Kangaroo island, off the coast of South Australia, there is also beginning to be some concern regarding overpopulation.

Is there a king koala bear?

No. There is no king koala, and koalas are not bears. There is no such creature as a "koala bear". It is just "koala".
