at these ranges, the stability of the bullet is very important and i like a heavier round such as the .308. most smaller rounda are more fickle about the bullet/barrel combo

The 243 Winchester is a awesome round to knock down small-medium game at 300 yards-plus as long as the rifle is equipped with a suitable scope. That's my opinion and experience.

Which is the better gun a 243 or a 30-30?

Depends on how you define better. Both are excellent hunting cartridges for medium game. The 30-30 is an older cartridge, and in general has less range than the .243, but fires a heavier bullet, and may be a better rifle for hunting in wooded areas with limited visibility and range. For shots at longer range, the .243 will have greater reach and accuracy. You pays your money, you takes your pick.

It depends on what one will be shooting at. For plinking, target shooting, or small game a .22 rimfire is called for. If you are going deer or medium sized game hunting a .243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, 260 Remington, or 7mm-08 Remington would be enough for killing deer, but not too brutal as far as recoil or muzzel blast is concerned.
