golden retrievers make excellent family pets. They are very loving and faithful. There are two here that follow my every move most of the day. They have a tendency to gain weight and need to be watched for that. They have a tendency for allergies also. As a protective dog for the house and yard, they wont work ...they would let the burglar or thief in, kiss and love em and walk him to the back door with your belongings and tell them thanks for taking them. As for physical characteristics, golden retrievers have 3 layers of fur, thicker as it gets to the top. This fur, and especially the top layer, is the one which replaces the fur they have as puppies. The color can vary in tone, but it can go from very light beige, to honey-colored, to almost light brown. Another characteristic is, in purebreds mostly, the width of the head. I've noticed that females' heads are usally narrower than the males', but that's just from personal experience. They also posess ears that are flapped down, shaped like a triangle upside-down.
