We've had 3 American Eskimos (all female). They all lived to be 17+ yrs. Two of them were mother and daughter. The mother was pure-bred with papers. Her daughter was a cross with some kind of terrier, but we loved her the same. She was all-white with a few light, biscuit-cream spots. Her coat fully matured after she was 5+ yrs. She was also the runt of the litter.

Our third Eskie is a female with papers from Massachusetts. Her original owner was a young woman who got married and then decided she was unable to care for it even as a pup. So, she gave it to a friend in the Houston, TX area who advertised it for sale after she had been bred with a pure-bred male Eskie at less than 1 yr. She had a litter of at least four. Her birthday is 15 April 2006. We got her in early July 2008, which makes her now 6.5 yrs.

Eskies require much attention (lots !) and must be treated as an intimate family member. They love to be walked 2X a day and do well in the house, like cuddly toys, and interaction with all family members. They are highly territorial and are very intelligent. Definitely not the back-yard, seldom-seen animal. If that is what you want out of your pet dog, then DO NOT get an Eskie. If treated that way, they will either get ill and die or they will become wild. They do well even with children but have a loyalty to one person, maybe two, such as a husband and wife.
