A male whitetail deer will eat whatever it feels is the most safely available food. It ranges from acorns to bird seed. While they prefer a high mast fruit or grain, such as apples and sweet corn, they are capable of surviving winters eating twigs and bark from young trees and bushes. Their very behavioral characteristics are often dictated by the available food source, and their diets vary as greatly as their range. Spanning the majority of North America, they survive and thrive in climates from southern Texas to frigid Saskatchewan and Alberta. In fact, the colder the climate, the hardier and heavier this species tends to be. A whitetail buck in the northern part of their natural range may reach 300lbs, while their southern cousins rarely more than 200lbs. The whole time, eating whatever they can get their grinders on safely. Because of their headgear, they are quite secretive.
