This was in honour of fire victim Sam the koala who was rescued by firefighter David Tree during backburning operations in the week before the Victorian "Black Saturday" bushfires of early 2009. The world was captivated by the pictures of Sam drinking from Mr Tree's water bottle. Unfortunately, due to complications arising from the disease chlamydia, Sam had to be put down several months later.Regarding live koalas: Koalas in the southern regions of Australia are bigger than those from the north.
