My lab is an older dog who isn't very big on playing and is satisfied with a small walk every day, so he doesn't need a large home. When he was younger, though, he needed a lot longer walks and we had a two acre yard and a three story home for him to roam.

Labs tend to be very energetic dogs up until they are 6 years old, and needs lots of room to play, especially if they aren't getting a two hour walk minimum every day. But if you are getting your lab plenty of exercise,

they can live in smaller housings. Older labs tend to be a lot more mild mannered and you might be able to have an older lab live happily in an apartment, again so long as you are getting enough exercise

How do you groom a Labrador Retriever with a slicker brush?

Just brush the Labrador with the direction the fur goes. So down the back, down on the legs and chest, etc. Their ears and head do not need to be brushed, at the fur is much shorter in those areas.

What kind of dogs are used for survice dogs?

Almost any healthy dog with a stable temperament can be trained to be a service animal, but some of the most commonly used breeds are: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd. Lab/Golden mixes are also very popular, as they are usually friendly, docile, intelligent, easily trained, easy to care for, and strong enough to support a person in need or pull them away from danger.

Why you should have a puppy?

because dogs, first of all, can be used for many purposes. do you live in an unsafe neighborhood? you can get a guard dog, like a German sheperd or an akita. do you need excercise? then get a faithful jogging companion like a labrador retriever or a golden retriever. do you like to go hunting? then get a hunting dog like a beagle or a nova scotia duck tolling retriever. best of all, dogs are beautiful, cute, and affectionate.

Do golden retrievers and German shepherds get along well?

No, the Labrador Retriever is recognised as a completely separate breed to the Golden Retriever. All though both of these breeds were originally bred to retrieve, they were bred along different lines. The Labrador Retriever has a shorter coat and can come in black, brown (chocolate) and blonde (yellow). The Golden Retriever (as it's name suggests) is almost always golden in colour with a longer, flowing coat. There are several other Retriever breeds that look similar, including the Flat-coated Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. All of these breeds were bred for a similar purpose but are each individual Kennel Club recognised breeds, except the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever are much more common.

What do you do with 5.5 year old labrador retriever that has an issue going to the bathroom outside and poops nearly everyday inside what can you do?

If trained properly, almost all Labrador retrievers are fully and completely house-broken by 10 weeks of age. It sounds like your dog has never been housebroken in his almost six years of life--this is your fault and not your dog's. You probably need to hire a reputable dog trainer (look for one who uses "positive training" as their method) to come to your house and teach you how to housebreak your dog and to analyze where the obstacles are in how you have been trying to train your dog previously so you can overcome these.
