If you were planning to go to another planet for example mars, Its 6 months to get there but then it would be a year and a half's journey back, that would purely be because you would want to get to earth when it was at its closest, so saving you fuel. Now That's 2 years, you would need a ship big enough to hold food , Water, air and everything else including a landing module to get down to the planet and off again. Imagine how big it would have to be. Now Imagine how much FUEL you would require to lift that ship into space send it on its way slow down as it approaches its target and then enough to get back.
