Shiba means brushwood (a reddish brown wood). In some dialects it also means small. In Japanese Shiba Inu are usually called Shiba Ken (Shiba breed) to avoid redundancy (inu already means dog).

In my opinion the name with the breed matches very nicely. So yes, it is a good name for a shiba inu dog.
Many people say that Shiba Inu's can be apathetic or stand-offish with people or other animals. My own Shiba Inu is extremely friendly with people, other animals and gets on great with our Cat and our 21 month old daughter (he was a year and a half old when she was born) Just keep in mind that all animals regardless of breed can have very different personalities and get your dog from a respected breeder who cares for their animals with kindness and compassion.
