She is a mustang just like Spirit and the rest of his herd.
The mare is lead of the mustang herd and the stallion is the follower. He is not a leader as many would think. On a National Geographic show with Pat Parelli they show the mustang mare lead the herd down a steep Hill.
The stallion attacks the attacker while the mother takes her foal back into the safety of the herd.
The group it travels with, usually consisting of a stallion, several mares and their young. Although, there are herds known as bachelor bands that are made up of colts taht have been forced from their original herd because they have become old enough to be a threat to the current dominant stallion.
The stallions recognise they're colts by there smell. Ocasinally a stallion won't recognise they're foal if it is a boy ( a stallion likes alot of mares in his herd so he doesn't care if they are girls) so the stallion will take the foal as an enemy stallion and fight the poor foal who will usally die and then be eaten by bears, Seriously!
Herd
Yes. Typically in any wild herd there is only one stallion with a harem comprising of 10 to sometimes 50 mares. The only other stallions that could be found in this herd are those young male horses that are too young to be ready to breed any females; these are called colts. Once they have reached sexual maturity or are old enough to leave their mothers, the dominating stallion will chase them away. There are also herds of stallions, often called bachelor herds, which mainly comprise of young teenage-like stallions that don't have their own females to guard and mate yet. Sometimes there may be an older stallion or two with them, depending on whether that old stallion has been replaced by a younger and stronger male.
Yes wild horses do live in groups called a herd and there is a lead mare and a stallion. The stallion protects the herd and the mare leads it.
