If something is lodged in your cat's throat the first sign to look for is unusual coughing, hacking (particularly dry-hacking, as if a fur ball may be lodged), lack of breathing/labored breathing (wheezing) and / or excessive salivating to indicate a need to vomit or dislodge the item. If there is a human caregiver around, the pet most likely will seek their attention and attempt to communicate distress and anxiety over the situation. Cats are naturally curious, active predators and prefer to eat or play with items that may not be ideal for their digestive systems. Additionally, cats are unable to remove items lodged in their throats and mouth as they do not possess opposable thumbs (such as humans and pandas), therefore restricting their ability to grab things (such as strings, bones, fur balls) out of their throats and esophageal tracts. They will, however, attempt to let someone know, any way they can! If the object becomes lodged further in the esophageal / digestive tract, the symptoms can rapidly progress: the cat will no longer eat, drink or move from its normal spot and looks "odd" or uncomfortable; The cat does not engage in normal activities to which it has become accustomed; The nose may become dry, the hair dull and the eyes hazy and unresponsive; Should any of these symptoms occur the veterinarian must be consulted immediately to prevent worsening of the condition and to determine the causative factor.
