That depends. A female cat, and that goes for all female mammals, will usually give birth in an enclosed area, such as a box or cave. For example, a mother wolf will give birth in a den, usually dug into the ground or on the side of a large boulder. Cats are the same way. Basically all mammals. For a mother cat to have a comfortable kitting, she will need a small box, so she feels protected, but large enough to fit her and at least six kittens (that's how many most mammals, except for humans and monkeys, can have in one litter.)
