No part of the cow is wasted, if the animal is healthy. Any animal that dies from reportable diseases such as BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), anthrax, foot-and-mouth disease, tuberculosis, brucelosis, or Johnes' disease must be disposed of either by burning or burial or both. Animals that have abcesses on their livers or other parts of their bodies (except brain and spinal cord typical of BSE cases), have that part of the carcass cut out and disposed of.
