I hate to tell you this but JOHN DEERe did not invent the first steel plow but he invented the first sucessful polished steel plow to help farmers in the Midwest plow the sticky, gumbo-like soil.
He invented the first self polishing steel plow. He saw how farmers in the Midwest were having a hard time plowing the ground because evrey 10-15 feet they would have to stop and scrape off the plow bottom which had become plugged with sticky, gumbo-like soil. He experiemtned with a polished steel saw blade and found the answer to all the farmers' problems.
The steel plow was an important invention because it made farmer's lives easier because before John Deere invented it, there was only the iron plow. When farmers plowed the ground, the soil stuck to the iron making farmers have to clean it regularly. The steel plow cleaned itself and relieved the farmer's burdens. It also brought more people too the south.
The issue that John Deere was trying to solve was finding a plow that would cut through the thick prairie grass and rich black dirt of Illinois. The wooden plows of the time wouldn't clean the black dirt away fast enough to work properly and the iron plows of the time were too heavy for the soil. Deere came up with a self-cleaning steel plow that was light enough to work the soil and also cleaned off the plow share when he was plowing.
