The same thing happened to my dog, he loves the water and is always swimming and playing around in ditches. I think he probably cut it on some broken glass or somehing that was thrown in the lake. I took him to the vet and they just gave us some cream to put un. It was a really nasty cut but he was fine after a few days.

Where is the heel of a dog's front paw is it up by the dew claws or is it just behind the middle pad?

It's by the dew claws. If someone is talking about "the heel of the paw pad" they mean the back edge of the paw. But if you compare a human skeleton to a dog's, you'll see that the bones are very similar, and the dog is essentially walking on its toes all the time.

How many pads are on a cat's paw?

There's a different number of toes in the front and the back feet. The back feet have 4 toes and the front ones have 5 (one is higher and doesn't make contact with the ground. The nail associated with this toe is called a dewclaw and is used for grooming and hunting). Each foot has one foot pad and one pad per toe. That makes 5 pads in the back and 6 pads in the front legs.

Haw many toes do dogs have?

4 on each foot (16) but on the two front legs you will find a duclaw higher up on the leg. this used to be a fifth toe, but as dogs evolved they had no use for it so it is now just a a piece of skin resembling a paw pad. cats and horses also have this (known as a chestnut on horses)
