Elk retain their antlers throughout the winter, only shedding them with the onset of spring. Antlers begin as bony growths covered with skin and hair.
Males use their horns to fight against each other during the mating season. Females provoke their males to fight by running past other males, so the male think it's threatening its territory. They then crash in to each other creating loud "bangs" which can be heard from miles away.
