It is good for their digestive system and it keeps them warm at night when its cold.
As it is edible for them and helps wear down their teeth. People feed timothy hay to guinea pigs that aren't pregnant or young as if you give a normal guinea pig alfalfa hay (which is for pregnant guinea pigs and young guinea pigs), it will be too high in calcium (I think) which is bad for them.
yes they can but they prefer hay which i use as bedding.
No, not at all hay helps a guinea pigs digestive system, my two are constantly eating hay :) hope this helped x
Usually alfalfa hay is used for young pigs and pregnant sows. It has a lot of calcuim, so they need it. Adult guinea pigs are best to have a good bowl of pellets and all the timothy hay they can eat!
on hay in a barn
It is a myth that pigs do not eat hay or, as a well-known jingle claims, they they do not know how to eat hay. Pigs eat hay fairly regularly and digest it thoroughly. Pigs raised on farms are not "mostly fed grain and protein supplements" for two primary reasons: 1) pigs will pasture forage like horses and cows; and, 2) grain and protein supplements are expensive. Pigs do not digest hay like cows and deer. Neither do horses. However, pigs graze like cows and horses, eating hay, grass, alfalfa, clover, etc. On farms during winters, pigs are regularly fed hay fairly exclusively. Because hay has a relatively low caloric value, pigs' manure in the winters is fairly "clean" -- high in cellulose and low in "dirty" waste.
Guinea pigs sometimes get small bits of hay in their eyes and this is not harmful unless the hay is stuck in the corner of the eye. Larger pieces of hay could hurt the guinea pigs eye.
only timothy hay.... but i think they would prefer no hay on them (especialy not near their eyes)
Guinipigs need hay daily. I have two male guinipigs and they love it,sometimes there cages come with hay feeders. Why?Because it almost helps wear down there teeth and its a good source of vitamins
It can. Guinea pigs have differentnutritionalneeds than hamsters. Guinea pigs need a diet high in vitamin C. Also guinea pigs can choke on nuts and seeds. Best to stick with guinea pig food for guinea pigs. Try to avoid food with seeds andkernelseven if it isadvertisedfor guinea pigs as it is best to stick with pellets. Guinea pigs have a differentdigestivesystem opposed to hamsters. Be sure to have hay available for guinea pigs for them to graze when they want. Timothy hay is the main part of their diet.AlfalfaHay is best left to baby guinea pigs as it has highcalcium. Orchard hay is well liked among guinea pigs.
No, I don't think they can.
Not giving guinea pigs unlimited Timothy Hay around the clock is a big mistake. Many people don't seem to know that guinea pigs NEED hay. Many people buy the hay they find at the pet store, the most commonly found packaged hay is Alfalfa hay. Many people buy Alfalfa hay because that is what the pet store people told them to buy. Alfalfa hay should only be given to pregnant mothers and growing babies. Alfalfa hay has too much calcium and other nutrients which can cause bladder stones in guinea pigs. Timothy hay helps their digestive system and is the best way to help keep their molars ground down and healthy.
