Horses are like humans, they are "handed" when it comes to picking up leads. Most horses have a lead that is more comfortable for them so they automatically pick up the comfortable lead when asked to canter. If you are going to the right and the horses comfortable lead is the left, then it may pick up the left lead even when asked to pick up the right one.

Training and strengthening the weak or less comfortable side can help a horse pick up the correct lead when asked.

Can you canter your horse on the road?

Cantering a horse on a very hard surface can damage the canon leg bones on the horse. Special rubber boots are used on horses that work on such a surface to protect the leg bones. It is not advised to canter a horse on a road. Cantering on a road is definetly not advised but you can on a softer road other than cement...it IS advised if you must canter on a road you canter on a dirt road....please do not canter on cement it can also not only hurt your horse but yourself, think about how much it would hurt to fall on cement. ouch. -GingerGal

How do you get a horse to listen to your commands?

Some horses respond better with voice or leg. If leg then to get them to walk, give them a nudge and trot, another nudge. Canter, put your outside leg back and inside leg slightly forward and squeeze hard. If they don't respond then give them a harder nudge or a little tap with the crop / whip. If voice then tell them to walk, tell them to trot, canter and so on. Saying it in a calm, clear voice would be ideal. Hope this helped!

Why do you put your outside leg back to canter?

it encourages the horse to strike off onto the correct lead. as the outside hind leg is the horse's first leg which it uses in canter it encourages them to use it.

How do you know if your horse is on the correct lead?

If your horse is on the correct lead in canter, around a corner the horses inside leg should lead first, so that there is enough balance. If the horse is on the wrong lead, the outside leg will lead and it will be harder for it to get round as it is unbalanced to the strides will be choppy and bouncy to ride.

What do horses do that cows don't?

Rear and kick with both legs. Horses can also canter. Cows can't do any of those things. They can't rear because they're too front-heavy, and they can only kick out with one leg, not both. They also can only walk, trot and gallop/run, but never canter. They can buck, but not to the same level or intensity as a horse can.

How do you teach the young horse to canter under saddle?

firstly, loaaads of groundwork. Lunging, free schooling, long reining, all that, and use your voice allot when changing speed and gait. when he has learnt the word canter, and your horse is confident in trot, you are ready to progress to cantering. Have an active trot round the pen/school/arena, what ever you would like to call it, sit for 3 beats of the trot, then ask with your voice. The horse is likely to go off balance and on the wrong leg for his first canter, but it will come in time, but it is important you remain in your centre of balance to help him out. Once he has got used to the canter a bit more (or if he has a habit of being quite lazy) then slightly use your leg, putting the outside leg slightly behind the girth etc, as well as using your voice. after a while of this he will also become used to the leg command. If he has a habit of striking on the wrong leg after allot of cantering, then use circles, and he should automatically change his leg, or go back to trot and keep asking for canter until he strikes on the wrong leg. Remember not to canter for long at first, as your horse will have to build up the muscles to help himself remain balanced, so after a few strides it is a good idea to go back to trot, And gradually increase the amount of time spent cantering.

How do you sit in canter?

How do you change your lead when cantering on a horse?

You want to bend your horses head to the middle of the ring. (Not to much). Also, you want to use your outside leg to push your horse into a canter. (Outside = the leg to the OUTSIDE of the ring.)

What leg goes 1st in canter?

The first leg or leading leg depends on what lead you ask the horse to use upon take off, they could use either the left or the right leg.
