Why does dogs breath rapidly?

There are a number of reasons why an old dog is breathing fast. A vet is the best option for any dog that is having difficulty breathing. It could be something simple such as Allergies, or something more serious.

Old dogs tend to pant heavily, or heavier than younger dogs. The reason for that is because older dogs have a harder time exercising. Dogs, unlike us, pant. This is similar to the reason why humans sweat. You could consider it "the dogs way of sweating." They also seem to breathe harder. This often means that the dogs' respiratory system is breaking down, or losing it's power or ability to work as efficiently. But don't be alarmed, your old pal will live a while longer. But if you dog is starting to sound like it's having an Asthma attack, I would see a doctor.
