I've never heard that an Italian Greyhound isn't suitable for a first time dog owner. I don't know what your lifestyle is, or what you are looking for in a pet dog. It could be, that for you in particular, the breed isn't a good choice.
The Italian Greyhound is one of the quietest and most pleasant of all the toy Dog Breeds. It is generally a cheerful, quiet and affectionate breed that are also quite playful and active. They are devoted companion dogs, but may chase small animals so they should be kept on-leash while walking.
Italian Greyhounds need lots of early socialization when they are puppies as they have a tendency to shyness. They respond favorably only to gentle, upbeat training methods that emphasize cheerful praise and food rewards. Physical corrections upset them because they can be "touch-sensitive", startling when touched unexpectedly or grabbed suddenly (one reason why they aren't recommend for young children).
Housebreaking this breed can be especially difficult, as Italian Greyhounds often refuse to go outside in the cold or rain.
You might try one of the free online dog breed selectors, that take into account your lifestyle, wants, and dislikes, then suggests a breed of dog that's likely to fit the bill. Alternatively, visit a few dog shows and talk to some breeders.
Keep in mind, mixed breed dogs are every bit as lovable and trainable as their purebred cousins!
The job of a greyhound is racing ,making there own owners happy, and most of all having fun.
