The colour white denotes purity, holiness and cleanliness in Buddhism. It is also referred to as "the one who leads out beyond the darkness of bondage".

The elephant is well known for it's strength and intelligence, therefore white elephants possess all of these qualities.

Also, Buddha's mother, Maya, claimed to have dreamt that a white elephant flew through the air and touched her right side with it's trunk, symbolising the Buddha's arrival within her.
