This is a very active breed, and if it is a puppy, he is probably just trying to get you to play with him (light nips on the hand etc.). However, if the dog is older and/or biting aggressively, he is trying to be the dominant member of the household and needs to be properly socialized.

They bite peoples ankles because they were originally used as ratters but they don't generally bite ankles so maybe you have a heeler dog because my friend has a heeler crossed with a jack Russel and we all thought he was a Jackie but he was a heeler if you run and your dog bites your ankle then its not a jack Russel its a heeler.
Hope I helped! AliceAndJasperrr
There could be several reasons your Russell is biting himself. First and foremost, make sure that he is not suffering from a physical problem. This could be fleas, injury, skin problems, ect. If he checks out physically move on the his mental health. Some dogs can aquire neurotic behaviours for a variety of reasons. Is he left alone for long periods of time? He could be bored, being a healthy, high-energy breed of dog it's possible he is just stir crazy. Has there been any changes in his immediate environment that could be causing him undue stress? If the behaviour continues it may be wise to consult your vet.
You will not always hear from me what you want to hear, but you will get the answer straight from the heart, remember "Mother nature knows best" animals are not our playthings and should be allowed to live as natural a life as possible. They are not a commodity, accoutrement or accessory to your life style.
They haven't got hands, so all their contact has to be via their mouth or paws, at that age you should expect nothing else, they are doing what nature intended them to do.
Watch any animal at the equivalent age, playing with their siblings and parents.
Humans; young eight year old boys will play-fight, or play football, Table Tennis, or whatever, with their fathers, until they reach about 10 to 12 when playing with their fathers is not so much fun as playing and competing with other children of the same age.
Carnivorous at that age would have been play fighting. By taking them away from their pack you have stolen their chance to learn how to defend themselves hunt and kill. They now only have you and their new family, so you should not be surprised if they treat you as they would their brothers and sisters. Their parents of course would be teaching them to hunt and kill, as well as using their mouth to tell them off, a quick bite works wonders. If you (the baby animal) are trying to mussel in on someone's else's eating area, you WILL get bitten, or in the case of a herbivore kicked, so you quickly learn not to invade someone's eating space, unless you are the dominate one then you will do the biting.
So using ones teeth is quite natural, even herbivorous use their teeth, I still have a huge scar on my back done by a horse in the Army, and yes it was my fault, I was not paying attention and did not read the signs.
