Even saying that you used to have one but were so disappointed when it broke/was lost/ wore out. Act pleased.
If the gift is opened later, send a letter including the above-- promptly. If the gift was mailed, mention that it arrived undamaged.
Do not criticize the gift in any way, be it size, style, model number, brand, or lateness of arrival. Do not ask if it can be exchanged.
