Yes, a tip is part of their income. Whenever you are receiving a service it is only polite to tip. I am actually a hairdresser.. Hairdressers actually put a lot of their own money into things that people don't expect- so basically tips are very much appreciated.

Is it legal for a hairdresser to charge you for being late for an appointment?

It depends on the policy of the salon, and if said policy was explained when you booked the appointment. A lot of places require you to have a credit card held on file for such an occasion, especially in the case the client never shows up. The reason for such a fee: What most people fail to consider is that these people are working strictly on commission 90% of the time. When you are late for your appointment, or completely fail to arrive, especially without being kind enough to cancel or at the very least call to give the salon a heads up you're running behind, you are literally costing the hairdresser money. That time space was blocked strictly for you, which means nobody else could fill the spot. Also, by being late, you potentially ran the hairdresser over and again, cost them another appointment/money, because they are having to extend your time without a raise in the profit. So if you weren't informed about a policy, then no, it is not legal. At the very least it's bad business. However, if you were informed, even ask to hold with a credit card, then the salon is in the right. How I know -- Work full time booking appointments/enforcing policy for a Spa/Salon

Shine Salon in Charlotte, NC?

I was bored with the same dull hair cut and color that I've had for years, so I made an appointment at Shine Salon, 1900 Commonwealth Ave. Charlotte. The first thing my hairdresser did was give me a consultation on my color and cut to decide what look would best suit my features. Two hours later I left with a great cut and an amazing new hair color. Count me as a satisfied customer.
