Italian for Countess, a nobiliary rank. Contessa was also a trade name for a camera line produced by Zeiss in the thirties. The Contessa was a sort of intermediate camera for the upbeat amateur, but not quite professional fare. It is , alas no longer manufactured. They were made by Zeiss-Jena ( pronounced like the Actress' prename- but a city in Germany, near Dresden. Both Jena and Dresden proper were hit by heavy incendiary attacks by the US Air Force in World War II.
