Mass-marketing is very much alive and well-- well, maybe not as lucrative as in previous decades, but still one of the biggest driving forces for sales of products and services besides the use of internet Marketing.

At least half of the "junk mail" every household receives are related to marketing aimed at current customers. The other half received are a pellet-gun type of mass marketing, that is, fire in a wide spread and hope you 'hit' one new customer. Some big examples of blind mass marketing are sales pitches via mail to :

  • new parents for child's "term life insurance"
  • anyone of an elderly age to join one of the biggest "older adult" organizations in the USA
  • anyone of an elderly age who receives Medicare to sign up for Prescription D prescription coverage
  • persons of any age to buy satellite TV services
  • persons of any age to buy cell phone services

Anytime mail is addressed to "Resident", it is likely part of a mass-marketing sales pitch. The mail is sent bulk rate, another clue of a mass-marketing campaign. Even if only a few thousand reply and become customers, the advertising dollars were well-spent.

On a local level, private citizens engage in mass-marketing when they canvass whole neighborhoods with flyers advertising anything from babysitting services, house painting, or general handyman services.
