Pros: Given that a sufficiently learned person is doing the focussing many major social changes can be forseen, George Orwell is an example of someone who prophesied the rise of surveillance technology as a source of control, the UK is currently employing vast numbers of CCTV cameras and anti security measures which some people see as an invasion of privacy. This was predicted in 1948.

A con would be that often we are more likely to learn as a species by looking to the past and not the future, therefore looking to the distant future can be unproductive. Also the further forward you look the less able to predict the future a person becomes, every year there is a chance of an unexpected change to society or technology meaning your entire prediction is useless. If you are looking 1000 years into the future, nothing can be accurately predicted.

In the words of Einstein: I know not what the weapons of world war three will be, I only know the weapons of world war four, sticks and stones.

Hope that helps
