In your question I assume that you mean to say that the letters indicate the job, and the numbers after it are the costs of the job for each individual person i.e. the cost of job A is 8 for person 1, 4 for person 2, 2 for person 3 etc. If this is the case then the most efficient job allocation would be A-5, B-1, C-4, D-3, and E-2 with costs of 1, 0, 2, 1, and 5 respectively, giving a total cost of 9. Unfortunately I cant really help with the explanation of how I did it as I just drew out a table and did it in my head, I can't remember the algorithm and can't find my notes from my discrete mathematics module anywhere.
