Simply, of the Old Testament books, the "Historical Books" are discussions of particular historical events in Israelite history, such as the conquest of Canaan, the coronations of Saul, David, and successor kings, and the defeat of the Israelites at the hands of the Assyrians and Babylonians. Conversely, the other sections are "the Law", "the Prophets", and "Poetry", all of which are similarly straightforward. It is worth noting that this delineation of books in the Bible is only followed by Christians. Jews divide the Old Testament into three sections, "the Law", "the Prophets", and "the Writings".

The Jewish Bible is not the Old Testament, it is the Tanach. Within the Tanach, there are three sections which are: Torah (Teachings), Nevi'im (Prophets), and K'tuvim (Writings). The Christian Old Testament was based on the Tanach, however, it was altered throughout to support the teachings of Christianity. One of the alterations was the order of the books which render the Jewish categorization inapplicable.

I can think of two semi-obvious ways to make four divisions: The Historical books, the Poetical books, the Major prophets, and the Minor prophets OR The Pentateuch, the other Historical books, the Poetical books, and the Prophets. As may be obvious from those lists, it's rather more usual to make three divisions (history/poetry/prophecy) ... to make four, you've got to split one of the three.
