A Mercury Dime has really been given the wrong name because the image on the obverse [heads] side of the coin is not that of the Roman god Mercury but that of Lady Liberty wearing a phrygian cap which is a symbol of liberty and freedom, with wings intended to symbolize freedom of thought. Correctly called the Winged Liberty Head dime, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, it was minted from 1916 to 1945. The Barber Dime, or sometimes called the Liberty Head Type dime bears the image of lady Liberty wearing a phrygian cap, a laurel wreath with a ribbon and a headband with the word "LIBERTY" inscribed on the obverse [heads] side of the coin. Designed by Charles E. Barber it was minted from 1892 until 1916.
