I was taught that a dollar sign had two ligns. An "s" with one line is a peso sign.

Technically true, but ...Both forms are in common use in the US. It's generally understood that a $ sign in the US means dollars, and in Mexico it means pesos. In fact, US $1 coins use a single line in the denomination.
