This is an echo of the 'Messianic Secret" found mainly in Mark's Gospel. According to Mark, Jesus frequently told those he cured to say nothing of this and also told the disciples that the message in his parables was for them, not for outsiders. See for example, Mark 4:11-12:"And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them."
Of course, this only takes us back to the original New Testament gospel and does not really tell us why Mark has Jesus want to hide his meanings.
