Biblical tradition holds that Psalm 62 was written by King David, which would place it early in the tenth century BCE. However, verse 9 contains a statement that could not have been written by David, and could scarcely have been written during the time of the monarchy: "and men of high degree are a lie."

Scholars say that the Psalms were a genre that was unknown at the time attributed to King David. They say that the Psalms were really written over a period of more than two hundred years, around the time of the Babylonian Exile.
