In ancient times, any sexual activity that didn't produce children was a threat to the growth of the Hebrew nation, just as adultery, sexual activity which put parenthood in doubt, was. Also, some sexual practices of their neighbors were condemned by the Hebrews just as their religious observances were, solely as a way of distinguishing and isolating the Chosen People.

Incidentally, the offense of the Sodomites was NOT simply homosexuality, but attempted rape.
