Visual checks on a lathe include:

  • Make sure machine is off
  • Area around lathe must be clean and free of tripping hazards before commencing work
  • No loose items lying on the machine
  • Clean bed ways and lightly oil them
  • Ensure the chuck is tightened to the headstock (do not over-tighten)
  • Turn the spindles and feel for any abnormalities and to ensure that feeds are not engaged
  • Look at the chuck and see if the jaws are not loosened to far or if a workpiece clamped in it is tight, also that the chuck spanner is not left in the chuck
  • Give the chuck a spin while in neutral and feel for any abnormalities
  • Switch the machine on and see if the oil flows in the oil flow sight glasses to ensure oil levels are correct.
  • Check apron oil sight glass for oil levels
  • Start the machine at about 200 to 250 RPM and listen for any abnormal noises. If all seems well, let the machine run for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up and enable lubrication to reach all ares within the head stock
