A Pirani gauge is a type of pressure gauge that is frequently utilized in a variety of industrial and scientific applications to measure levels of low pressure or vacuum. The principle of thermal conductivity underpins its operation. A heated wire element that is exposed to the gas being measured makes up the gauge. The gas molecules move heat away from the wire as they collide with it, altering its electrical resistance. A pressure reading is then generated from this change in resistance. Pirani gauges are renowned for their cost-effectiveness, dependability, and compact size.

Sensor Element: The core component of a Pirani gauge is a sensor element, usually a thin wire or filament made of a material with a known and stable resistance, such as platinum or tungsten.

Heating Element: The sensor element is heated to a constant temperature by passing an electric current through it. The wire heats up, and its resistance changes with temperature.

Heat Transfer: When the gauge is exposed to the vacuum or low-pressure gas, heat is transferred away from the heated wire to the surrounding gas. The rate of heat loss depends on the gas density (pressure) in the chamber.

Resistance Measurement: The gauge measures the wire's resistance, which varies as a result of changes in temperature due to heat loss. As the pressure in the vacuum chamber changes, the rate of heat loss changes accordingly, causing variations in the wire's resistance.

Pressure Calculation: The gauge is calibrated so that it can convert the measured resistance into a pressure reading. Typically, the resistance is inversely proportional to the pressure, meaning that as the pressure decreases, the resistance increases.

What are the drawbacks of pirani gauge?

The Pirani gauge is base on a heating element that is cooled due to the thermal conduction of the measured gas. The heating elements resistance drops as the thermal conduction is increase i.e. more gas results in a drop in resistance. On the other hand less gas results in less conduction increased temperature of the heating element and increased measured resistance. This is a very robust gauge and is suitable for relatively high pressures, down to 10^-4 Torr. Below that you need a different gauge as the low number of gas molecules does not allow any measureable change.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pirani gauge?

AdvantagesSignificantly better resolution in the range above 100 Torr. [5]The power consumption is drastically reduced compared to continuously operated Pirani gauges. The gauge's thermal influence on the real measurement is lowered considerably due to the low temperature threshold of 80°C and the ramp heating in pulsed mode. The pulsed mode allows for efficient implementation of modern microprocessor technology. It will useful up to 10^-4 torr.Disadvantages Increased calibration effortLonger heat-up phaseIt is not useful at low pressure(below 10^-4torr)
