What is the difference between a solid camshaft and a hydraulic camshaft?

The function of a camshaft is to open, and close the valves. When the motor gains rpm's, the valves, which already undergo a pretty violent cycle, get to hammering away at themselves, and their seats, in the head. A hydraulic lifter has a spring, and uses oil pressure, to cushion this act, and ease the hammering on the valves. The camshaft lobe, also has more of a gradual arc, to the high point of the lobe, thus increasing distance of travel, and further slowing down, and easing the open/close, process. The advantage. Longer egine life, quiter operation, better driveability, smoother operation. The cost, horsepower. An engine is like an air pump. Except, the more air you put through it, the more power, you get out. A solid lifter is just that, solid. No spring, or oil pressure cushion. So, the action at the valve is more positive, and harsh. A solid lifter cam lobe is structured different. The ramp on the lobe, The part of the lobe between the base circle, or heel of the lobe, to the fullest open point, is straight. No cushion, or arc. Advantages: more horsepower. Disadvantages: Noisey, shorter valve life, need to be adjusted more often, which is a different adjustment than hydraulics, by the way, less smooth operation. Should only be used for high performance, as often, different valve train parts are needed for dependablity, as well as basic operation.

Will seafoam quiet a lifter?

Seafoam is often used as a cleaning agent for engine components, including lifters, but it may not always quiet a noisy lifter. It can help dissolve sludge and deposits that might be causing the lifter to stick or function improperly, potentially reducing noise. However, if the lifter is damaged or worn, Seafoam may not resolve the issue, and more extensive repairs or replacements might be necessary. Always consult a mechanic for persistent lifter noise.
