What is the reason of use of stub tube on boilers?

Stub tubes are used to seal off a tube sheet after a tube rupture, rather than replacing the tube. They are cheap temporary repairs made to get the boiler back on line in the shortest amount of time.

Who invented the corner tube boiler?

November 12, 1944, the first basic patent for Corner Tube Boilers (= Eckrohrkessel, Berlin, Germany) was applied for. During this time oil as fuel ran short. All efforts, to save energy and use domestic and alternate resources, were to be made. One came up with an idea, to operate cars and trucks, not on gasoline or diesel fuel, but with steam.Dr. Vorkauf, a specialist for water circulation in boilers, especially in La Mont boilers (forced circulation boilers), got the order to design a small boiler for a steam engine fired with coal or wood. The result was not as expected a forced circulation boiler, but a natural circulation boiler. A forced circulation boiler of this size would have been too costly.Due to his experience with the La Mont boiler Dr. Vorkauf had the idea to obtain a pre-separation of the steam - water mixture in front of the drum. An extremely lively water circulation resulted from unheated downcomers and a suitable arrangement of the mixture tubes. The unheated downcomers were installed in the 4 corners of the boiler, where they not only served the purpose of water circulation, but also as a support frame for the boiler. The boiler with such an arrangement of the downcomers in the corners was called Corner Tube Boiler (Eckrohrkessel, Eckrohr-Boiler).

What is the metal used for making tubings of firetube boiler?

The tubes for fire tube boilers are usually made out of metal composites and can contain lead, steel and/or other metallic elements or alloys. Fire tube boilers are generally very large and many are made for use in locomotives.

Why water tube boiler must use pure water to avoid severe damage to the equipment?

Water tube boilers suffer from impurities in the water quickly building up on the tube walls. These solids create hot spots on the tube walls, causing uneven heating along the surface of the tubes. Left unchecked, this kind of fatigue can lead to pin hole leaks in the tubes, tube ruptures (not major unless its industrial application), and general build up of solids in the tubes impede water flow in the boiler. This is not good as it could potentialy stop the thermicsyphoning effect, thus lowering the effeciency of the boiler. This can be avoided when using distilled water as all solid impurities are removed. If the application for your steam engine isn't to big then its feasible to have a home still to purify and/or desalinate water.
