There are two major categories of plastic surgery. 1) reconstructive surgery and 2) cosmetic surgery . There is no age where reconstructive surgery is contraindicated. For major cosmetic surgery such as tummy tuck, Liposuction, and breast augmentation; most plastic surgeons require that a patient is 18 years of age and able to sign their own informed consent form. There are exceptions to this rule. Some procedures are both cosmetic and reconstructive in nature, such as a young girl who fails to develop one breast or a benign mole in an unsightly location such as the tip of the nose. Many plastic surgeons would do these "cosmetic" procedures in patients younger than 18. I am a plastic surgeon in Utah (Dr. York Yates) and would not offer a purely cosmetic procedure such as breast augmentation for larger breasts alone to a patient under 18 years of age.

Plastic or cosmetic surgeons perform operations to either change the anatomy and the looks of a person's face or body. It's considered major surgery so it shouldn't be entered into lightly.Desire for Plastic SurgeryMany people have certain parts of their face or body that are unappealing to them. This could their nose, lips, eyebrows, belly or breasts. They have strong desires to make them look a certain way that they feel will enhance their overall beauty and appearance so they're willing to have plastic or reconstructive surgery to correct these facial and bodily anomalies.Since plastic surgery can be very expensive and most of it isn't covered by any medical insurance plan, they have to have enough disposable income in order to have the procedures done. These can include a rhinoplasty, a tummy tuck, a breast augmentation that consists of either a reduction or an increase in size, or an entire face lift, among other cosmetic surgery procedures. Most patients are quite satisfied with the results of their plastic surgery and feel content that they made the right decision in getting the work done.Plastic Surgery PreparationPreparation for plastic surgery involves many components. First, the plastic surgery patient has to refrain from eating for at least twelve hours prior to surgery. He should rest himself as much as possible and eat a healthy diet to build up his strength in the days well before the cosmetic surgery procedure. When the patient arrives at the plastic surgeon's office, he changes into a surgical gown and lies down on a gurney to be transported into the operating room. He's given intravenous sedation as the plastic surgery team of surgeons and nurses and assistants gets ready to perform the procedure. Then he's given a general anesthetic which both puts him to sleep and completely eliminates all sensation of pain from the procedure. Some patients elect to have more than one procedure done during the same office visit, and in some cases, the cosmetic surgeon will permit this to be done.Postoperative CareThere will be pain, swelling and bruising in the area where the plastic surgery was done. Prescription medication as well as topical ointments will have to be used for the first week or two. The patient won't be able to fully return to his former lifestyle for several weeks following any major cosmetic surgery procedure, so bed rest and a nutritious diet are essential for the surgical area to heal most effectively.

For 2004, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery each cite an average figure near $3,4001 for just the surgeon's fees for breast surgery with breast implants. However a surgeon's cost for breast augmentation may vary based on his or her experience . It is likely that the actual cost of the entire breast augmentation surgical procedure will be more than the estimated $3,400 figure.

You should expect some discomfort after having a breast enlargement. This is worse during the first week to two weeks. You will need help around the house as you wont be able to lift anything heavy for up to six weeks. Expect some bruising and swelling to the breasts in the first couple of weeks. This is perfectly normal and will settle in time. Your Plastic Surgeon will provide adequate pain relief after your operation.
