The answer above is correct, but to expand on the answer. A girl should not be in a heavy running program (over 20 miles a week) until they are physically developed. An average age for this is 14. THere are two main issues on this the first is the knees. A girls leg muscles are not fully developed which can lead to the knee cap floating and rubbing against other parts of the knee which will lead to pain and or injury. (One way to counteract this is to have the athlete run on trails and soft surfaces and have the top of her knee taped down. Another issue with some girls is body fat - girls must maintain a healthy level of body fat or their menstrual cycle is thrown off. My daughter is submitted to Pizza and no sports when she drops weight.
