If you leave your job, and have insurance through your employer, ERISA laws offer you protection for continued coverage. You will have to pay the premiums yourself, through a program called "COBRA" but can continue with your insurance uninterrupted for up to 18 months.

If it important not to let your insurance lapse. If you do, and you go uninsured for more than 63 days, any future plan you get through another employer can exclude pre-existing conditions for up to 12 months. Although ERISA law allows plans to exclude pre-existing conditions for up to 12 months, if you had previous insurance (that has not lapsed) ERISA law (under HIPPA) requires that you be credited that time. For example, if you currently have had insurance at your employer to cover Diabetes for more than one year, when you apply for a new plan through an employer-sponsored plan (private plans are not covered under ERISA law) they must count that year as "credit" towards meeting the one-year pre-existing condition clause.
