Sadly, this is true. In Africa, AIDS is spread mainly from heterosexual contact; the most common means of transmission is a man who used prostitutes then coming home and infecting his wife. Because there is great shame associated with this disease, many men who have it do not seek help until it is too late. Further, drugs are very expensive, and many women who are infected cannot afford treatment. This situation is exacerbated by church policies in some countries-- certain religious leaders discourage the use of condoms, even though condoms can prevent diseases like HIV from spreading. The end result is large numbers of deaths, and too many innocent children left as orphans.
