Deformity, in a prehospital emergency context means any structural abnormalities of the body observed primarily through through sight and palpation. Auscultation may also be used to diagnose internal deformity or abnormalities.

A good way of determining whether something is deformed (eg swollen, bent etc) is to compare the affected side with the other. For example, if the right hand appears deformed upon palpation, compare this with the left hand. If the right hand appears to be bigger then the left hand, it is a good indication of a deformity caused by swelling.
