There are several reasons for this, ranging from an infection under the toe nail, to radioactive exposure. If the toe nail has been severely damaged, such as dropping something on them, this may cause the nail to regenerate, however this is generally a slower process than simply 'dropping off'.

If you can't figure out why this has happened, or you have recently returned from chernobyl and are worried about why your bits and pieces are falling off, see your medical practitioner as soon as you can.
