As early as 1983 in junior high, I remember signing notes passed in class with BFF, TTFN (Winnie the pooh origins) and even 2Good + 2Be = 4gotten. Ask anyone with a yearbook at least 30 years old and take a look at the signatures--you'll find "text speak". I grew up an Air Force brat beginning in the 70's and went to plenty of schools across the world; in every school people were writing these things. Taking that into account, I think the first answer above should be taken with a grain of salt.
