Tripoli, during the Barbary Pirate Wars, in 1805. There were only eight Marines, led by Lieutenant Percy O'Bannon. O'Bannon was awarded a sword in appreciation, and the sword all Marine officers wear with their dress uniforms to this day are replicas of O'Bannon's. There were a much larger number of mercenaries and Tripolitans opposed to the Bashaw.
Their objective was to replace the usurper on the throne of Tripoli with the rightful Bashaw, Hamet. Hamet's younger brother had stolen the throne and was one of the leaders of the Pirate States of North Africa. The expedition captured Derna, but before they could reach the City of Tripoli a Peace Treaty was signed. Hamet was abandoned, and never regained his rightful kingdom.
William Eaton led a daring expedition in 1805 to rescue American captives held by the Bey of Tripoli in Darnah, Libya. He organized a small force of U.S. Marines, mercenaries, and local allies, and marched overland from Egypt. Upon reaching Darnah, Eaton successfully orchestrated a surprise attack, which culminated in the liberation of the captives. His bold actions helped demonstrate U.S. resolve against piracy and established Eaton as a prominent figure in early American military history.
There were about 300 American deaths. Of these, 49 of the deaths were US Marines. An additional 53 Marines were wounded. Other sources say there were 276 American casualties.
I believe the United States Marine Corp were formed during the the American Revolutionary War to combat the British, in particular the British Royal Marines.
According to recent articles, U.S. Marines have withdrawn from Iraq completely as of early 2010. The Marines handed over control over to the U.S. Army at that time, which began an accelerated decline of American troops and involvement in Iraq.
