When he gained control of the government he started by eliminating the freedom of speech and press. Once that was done he went after other rights and because there was no press to report what he was doing he was able to get away with it and to keep going. Recently Turkey voted in a new leader and the first thing he did was suspend the freedom of the press and took over the judicial system. Today civil rights have been taken away in Turkey.
When Congress voted to declare war on Germany in April 1917, the vote passed, with only 50 representatives (and 6 senators) voting against it. A few months later when Congress voted to declare war on Germany's ally Austria-Hungary, the vote passed with only one representative voting against it (and zero senators).
Federalism. Strong cental government once and for all exercising its abilities to make states conform to a centralized interpretation of the constitution. (Actually historically more important then ending slavery which, even Lincoln believed, would have died as an institution itself given time). Up until the Civil War, self determination of the states was more important than a strong central government. Many times during the 20th century the federal government was able to induce states to change inherently unjust situations by the force of the strong federal government(and the National Guard). This is most seen during the civil rights movement. That would have been unheard of prior to the Civil War.

Voted Democrat.
