Many men from around the world went to America to fight for one side or the other, for their own reasons, during the American Civil War, and Australians were no different. A specific case was that Confederate ship, the SS Shenandoah, docked in Melbourne for repairs after the Victorian Government decided to adopt the rules of neutrality. A search of the ship seperately by Commander Waddell and the local police revealed no locally enlisted men, but a boat load of men was seen rowing away from the Shenandoah. It was later presumed that at least some local men had sailed with the now repaired SS Shenandoah.
