Tension between the King and Parliament. Parliament accused the King of being a Catholic, being a tyrant and causing religious friction in Scotland. King Charles I believed Parliament were intruding on his right to rule. At the time, the only power that Parliament had over the King was when it came to raising taxes. The last straw came when the King entered the House of Commons in person to arrest 5 MPs that disagreed with him, but was humiliated when it was discovered they had escaped via the back door.
